A Doctor's Note

A Doctor's Note on June

Dear Friends,

June started off with another visit to our southern border. To help depict what we saw at the border, House Budget Republican Leader Jason Smith joined me on my podcast – Doctor in the House. I also discussed the trouble at the southern border and the growing energy crisis with Maria Bartiromo on Mornings with Maria.

I teamed up with Congressman Drew Ferguson, D.M.D. (R-GA), to draft an op-ed highlighting our legislation, the Behavioral Intervention Guidelines (BIG) Act. This legislation will equip schools and communities with the tools they need to ensure the safety and health of each student, and hopefully prevent future mass shootings.

After the heartbreaking shooting in Uvalde, Texas, debate covered Capitol Hill over how to finally put an end to the criminal violence. Between votes, I joined Aliysn Camerota with CNN Newsroom addressing anti-Second Amendment bills. During my hit, I emphasized the steps taken in my district. In April, we had the Emergency Preparedness Summit where Chief Cairney from Argyle ISD shared the measures he takes to keep his district safe.

While I appreciate that the Senate had discussions among some members about what a bipartisan solution to criminal violence would look like, House members were denied that opportunity. I voted against S. 2938, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a bill that came before the House less than 24 hours after it passed the Senate and without full committee consideration in either chamber. I want an end to this senseless criminal violence, and I have offered several suggestions including tightening up the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and the BIG Act.

I was joined by Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) to introduce H.R. 7995, the Gold Card Act of 2022. This critical legislation will allow patients to receive quality medical care in a timely manner by streamlining the prior authorization process for physicians.

I attended an energy forum, "Skyrocketing Energy Costs are Hurting Americans," hosted by House Energy and Commerce Committee and Natural Resources Committee Republicans. The Majority refuses to address the energy crisis we are facing because of the Biden Administration’s policies.

I announced the 2022 Congressional Art Competition winners and the 2022 Academy Appointees.

There were quite a few big decisions released by the Supreme Court this month including the anticipated Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. I have the privilege of seeing both sides of this argument as a doctor and a policy maker. I joined Newsmax highlighting how America is a great country to be in, after the life-changing decision made by the Supreme Court.

Here are my thoughts on a few other decisions:

Until next time, this is your doctor's note.
