Burgess: Life must be protected at all stages

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court announced its decision on Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Center, overturning Roe v. Wade.

“Before coming to Congress, I practiced medicine for nearly 30 years,”said Burgess.“During those years there were times when I would need to emergently intervene after a mother had suffered severe complications from an abortion, putting her life in danger. It was then my responsibility to save her life, which I did without hesitation. Today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court will save not only the lives of the unborn, but countless mothers. Having an abortion is not a simple fix or just another form of birth control as it has been advertised.”

“The Supreme Court’s decision rightly returns the almost 50-year abortion debate back to the hands of elected officials instead of unelected judges. The United States is one of only seven countries, along with China and North Korea, that allows abortions after 20 weeks. It is time that legislators, not judges, decide the future of abortion policy in our country.

“I have the privilege of seeing both sides of this argument as a doctor and a policy maker. The United States Constitution is very clear when it guarantees a right to life and now the Supreme Court has publicly recognized that fact. I believe it is time for Congress to enact policies that will build up communities.”
