Statement by Congressman Michael C. Burgess on the New 2004 Toyota Prius
Thursday, July 08, 2004
Mr. Burgess: Mr. Speaker, Congress has been unable to pass an energy bill – an energy policy that would allow us some measure of independence from foreign oil imports in this country.
But a couple weeks ago, just before our break, we were treated to the exhibition of several cars that embrace the hybrid technology, the gas-electric technology on Capitol Hill. Many of us did not get a chance to look at those, but I wanted to call attention to the 2004 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Toyota Prius.
If I could quote from Motor Trend’s article, “…. [Prius] shines more brilliantly than any other. The all-new Toyota Prius, a roomy, feature-packed, and user-friendly gas/electric hybrid capable of delivering an astonishing 60 miles per gallon in city driving. It is an altogether more compelling car than any other. It's the first hybrid that an
enthusiastic cannot only enjoy but provides a preview of what the future of extreme fuel efficiency and stirring performance where they will happily coexist in one package.”
This is truly a bipartisan technology. I understand that on the other side even Mr. Honda owns a Toyota.
