| Posted in Floor Statements

During a 1-minute speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Congressman Michael Burgess read a letter he received from a Texas State Senator, Tommy Williams, who wrote asking Burgess to oppose President Obama's health care reform proposal, and listing why the bill would be bad for Texans, calling the bill "devastating."

The last hour just ended, and you heard the admonition at the end of the hour that it is extremely important for people to pay attention. And during this hour, I am going to echo that thought. It is important for people to pay…

Congressman Burgess Floor Statement On H.R. 2701, the Intelligence Authorization Act

| Posted in Floor Statements

Thank you Madame Speaker. This is a flawed bill; I think this side of the aisle has sufficiently laid out the plethora of reasons why it should be sent back to committee and fixed. The intelligence community is too important to our national security to allow a bill with as many concerns as this one to pass. However, I’m not here today to discuss this bill per se, but rather to discuss…

Burgess Calls For More Transparency In Health Reform Debate

| Posted in Floor Statements

Well, Mr. Speaker, here we are at the end of another workday on Capitol Hill. It's a snowy night outside in the Nation's Capitol, and we are having a conversation, you and I, here on the House floor. I will do most of the talking, but I know that my remarks must be addressed to the Chair, and they certainly are addressed to the Chair. But, Mr. Speaker, both you and I know that people can…

Burgess Encourages Caution in the Creation of Financial Commission

| Posted in Floor Statements

Mr. Speaker, I am generally not in favor of commissions. I think Congress gives up too much of its power to commissions in my brief experience here. But this is one point that I think does call out for a commission . Certainly just as egregious as what happened to this country on 9/11 was what happened to this country in September 2008 when we experienced a financial meltdown. And to date, we have not looked back into the causes of the crisis and held anyone accountable.

Rep. Burgess: No Discussion Plus No Debate Does Not Equal Democracy

| Posted in Floor Statements

Mr. Speaker, I also come to the floor today to talk about this $700 billion bill that's in front of us. I use the term ``bill'' advisedly because we have seen no bill. We are here, debating talking points on, perhaps, what is the largest fundamental change in our Nation's financial system in its history. House Republicans have been cut out of the process.

“Protecting the Electric Grid from Cyber Security Threats”

| Posted in Floor Statements

The hearing before this Subcommittee today is very timely. Not just because today we recognize and remember the victims of 9/11 but also because this is hurricane season. As we witnessed during hurricane Hannah, our electricity infrastructure continues to be unnecessarily vulnerable, and that vulnerability is the primary source of my concern today. If the testimony presented here is correct, and the advice of Committee counsel is an accurate depiction of the vulnerabilities in the electrical grid, the question may very well be, "how loud is this time bomb ticking?"
