Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), vice-chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, today issued the following statement in response to today’s hearing, “The GM Ignition Switch Recall: Investigation Update”:

“The report on General Motors’ internal investigation of the ignition switch recall is deeply troubling.  However, maybe the most concerning aspect of the report is the simple recognition that while everyone at GM had responsibility to fix the problem, no one took responsibility. That is unacceptable for one of America’s flagship companies and one that millions of people rely on every day.  

“I was pleased that Ms. Barra and Mr. Valukas were forthcoming with information today in our hearing. The Valukas report is a start, because the first step to solving a problem is identifying it.  Now that the problem is identified, it is my hope that GM will heed the advice of the recommendations provided so that this never happens again. The 13 deaths that resulted from this must not be in vain.”
