Burgess Statement on the Passage of the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act in the House of Representatives

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement on the passage of the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act in the House of Representatives.

"This Women’s History month, we celebrate all women, but especially mothers who make great sacrifices as they carry a child in their womb,” said Congressman Burgess. “The passage of the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act demonstrates to all mothers and families our strong commitment to ensuring their well-being and protecting them from maternal health disparities. Being an OB/GYN with almost 30 years of experience, I understand the unique challenges that mothers go through even before the 12-month post-partum period that now sees the most tragedies. While we know that over 80 percent of pregnancy related deaths are preventable, even one death is too many. I urge the Senate to pass this bill swiftly to provide the necessary information to enhance quality health care outcomes for mothers in our nation.”

Background:
Congressman Burgess was joined by Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO), Buddy Carter (R-GA), Robin Kelly (D-IL), Kat Cammack (R-FL), and Kathy Castor (D-FL) in introducing this bipartisan legislation to provide federal support to address health disparities during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum while reducing maternal death rates.

Congressman Burgess spoke in support of the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act on the House of Representatives floor.
