Washington, D.C. – Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) today issued the following statement after voting against raising the debt ceiling:

“As our nation’s debt approaches a crippling $17.3 trillion dollars – or $140,000 per American household – it is irresponsible to raise our debt limit to allow more spending and effectively write a blank check to borrow more money for an entire year.

“Instead, we must find ways to cut unnecessary government programs and expensive red tape. Unless we get our runaway spending under control, our children and grandchildren will bear the burden of a once-great nation in decline.”
