Burgess Statement on Being Named Chairman of House Rules Committee

Washington, D.C. - Today, Speaker Mike Johnson named Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) as the Chairman of the House Rules Committee. Congressman Burgess released the following statement.

"I am beyond grateful to serve as the Chairman of the House Rules Committee, and I do not take this appointment lightly," said Congressman Burgess. "For the remainder of the year, I am strongly dedicated to keep prioritizing policies that benefit the American people. It is an honor to lead my fellow members in the Rules Committee as we examine each piece of legislation before it reaches the House of Representatives floor. From record-high inflation to border and national security risks, our country is facing many challenges under the Biden Administration. Our Republican commitment to spearheading legislation that advances the values of the United States and priorities of Americans first is now more important than ever. I want to thank Speaker Mike Johnson for entrusting me with this opportunity to serve as the Chairman of the House Rules Committee.

I would like to congratulate Congressman Tom Cole for being named the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. Since being elected to Congress together in 2002, Chairman Cole has been a great mentor to me and a dear friend. He has demonstrated numerous times that under his leadership, policies that deliver to the American people are considered in Congress. I am confident that he will lead the Appropriations Committee to work on legislation that will strengthen our national security, grow our economy, and benefit American families."
