Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL), and Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) introduced H.R. 3884, To amend title XI of the Public Health Service Act to reauthorize the program providing for sickle cell disease and other heritable blood disorders research, surveillance, prevention, and treatment.
"Having cared for patients with sickle cell disease, I have seen firsthand the devasting effects it can have. By reauthorizing these critical programs, we empower individuals and families affected by sickle cell to access essential care, treatment, and research. I appreciate the support of Congressman Davis and Congressman Carter in our joint effort to ensure that we have the resources to better understand this disease and maintain access to vital services for those affected by it,” said Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. "The consequences and complications of sickle cell disease are extreme. This disease includes early childhood death from infection, stroke in young children and adults, lung problems similar to pneumonia, chronic damage to organs including the kidney, leading to kidney failure, and to the lungs causing pulmonary hypertension, and severe painful episodes. In fact, pain episodes are a hallmark of sickle cell disease. “Dr. Michael C. Burgess (TX-26) and I in the U.S. House of Representatives have worked collaboratively on multiple, successful legislative efforts over many years to improve the lives of people with sickle cell disease. The introduction of H.R. 3884 is another example of our continue commitment to those with this condition and their unique perspectives on suffering and commitment to life,” said Congressman Danny K. Davis. “As a lifelong health care professional, I understand the heartbreaking toll sickle cell disease takes on patients and their families. Unfortunately, Georgia is home to one of the largest sickle cell disease populations in the country, which is why it’s so important that we act quickly to save lives and prevent further pain. I’m proud to co-lead this bill that will reauthorize critical programs so that patients have the support and resources they need to battle this terrible disease,” said Congressman Buddy Carter.
