House and Senate Co-Chairs of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Congressman Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), and Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution to designate May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month promotes rider safety, education, licensing, and awareness in order to decrease the number of crashes. Motorcycles help to reduce congestion, are fuel-efficient, and have little impact on transportation infrastructure. Motorcycle awareness is beneficial to everyone on the road.  

“I cannot blame all the riders who are enjoying riding the open road in a place as beautiful as Texas,” said Congressman Burgess. “With the Summer months quickly approaching, more people across America will start using their motorcycles to get to work, to go to the store, to travel, or to just go for a ride. Having more riders join the open road increases the risk of accidents. The old saying goes: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For bikers, prevention is riding the right way – and that is responsible. That means getting trained, wearing protective gear, and being aware of the cars and trucks around you. And for drivers, that goes for you too. A simple distraction like texting on your cell phone can lead to a dangerous situation with riders. If everyone does their part, we can ensure that everyone makes it home safely.”

“Just like millions of Americans who ride a motorcycle every year, I cannot wait for that first nice day to take my bike out and enjoy the open road,” said Congressman Walberg. “Not only does Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month serve as an important reminder of safe operating procedures while riding, but it also serves as a reminder to all motorists that we all share the road so we must remain alert and vigilant while operating any vehicle. Remember, look twice, save a life!"

“Some of my most cherished memories include motorcycles, from delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields to riding through the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” said Senator Ernst. “As co-chair of the Motorcycle Caucus, I’m proud to share my love of riding and work to improve safety through helmet protection and passenger vehicle awareness this Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”
