Burgess: FDA must standardize Operation Warp Speed

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) introduced the Operation Warp Speed Resolution today. This resolution would implement successful policies from Operation Warp Speed into regular process at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Thanks to the Trump Administration Operation Warp Speed provided us with three safe and effective vaccines,”
said Burgess. “The FDA’s ability to quickly review, accelerate, and approve these necessary tools in our fight against COVID-19 is astonishing. It normally takes five years for the process to be fully complete. I wonder how many cures are waiting to be approved but are held back due to government red tape and lack of modernization. These potential cures could be for cancer or sickle cell disease for example. We must do everything that we can to modernize and streamline the FDA’s approval process and encourage innovation that will lead to future live saving cures.”

Background on this resolution:

  • Will call for FDA to issue a report and/or guidance identifying ways to accelerate the approval process.
  • Encourage the FDA to cross-reference data.
  • Allow for concurrent trial approval processes.
