Burgess and Axne Raise Awareness for Blood Clots

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) and Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-Iowa) introduced a resolution for “Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Awareness Month.”

“Each year nearly 100,000 Americans lose their life to blood clot,” said Congressman Burgess. “By recognizing Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Awareness Month, we can hopefully raise awareness to help prevent further blood clot related deaths. I am grateful for Congresswoman Axne joining me in bringing attention to this important cause.”

“Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolisms impact nearly one million Americans each year, and I’m proud to partner with Rep. Burgess to help raise awareness about these preventable conditions,” said Congresswoman Axne. “I want to thank my constituents who have shared their stories with me and I look forward to continuing to work together to help combat these serious health conditions and save lives.”

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in the dep veins of the body, most commonly the leg. This can lead to potentially life-threatening complications if a blood clot breaks off and travels to the lung, and sadly kills an estimated 100,000 Americans every year. These deaths are often preventable and treatable, especially if discovered early.

What others are saying:
“As a practicing physician who treats Texans with venous thromboembolism, I am grateful to Dr. Burgess and Congresswoman Axnefor highlighting this important need for more public education around these preventable conditions of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. One in six individuals are diagnosed with these conditions every day in Texas, and it is critical we make patients and providers aware of the signs and symptoms of blood clots. This is life-saving knowledge,” said Dr. Michael Kroll associated with the National Blood Clot Alliance.

"As an Iowan and six-time blood clot survivor, I applaud the leadership of Rep. Axne and Rep. Burgess for introducing this much needed resolution to raise awareness regarding deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. This effort calls attention to blood clots as a serious, but often preventable condition affecting nearly 1 million individuals each year. Every American should know their risks," said Todd Robertson at Stop the Clot.
