Burgess remarks on hearing Biden’s response to the Taliban Resurgence in Afghanistan

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) released the following statement on the situation in Afghanistan.

"My thoughts keep turning to the families I met with who have lost loved ones due to the Afghan conflict," said Burgess. "To the service members who fearlessly and honorably served our country in Afghanistan, your efforts were not in vain. You protected our country and for that we are forever grateful.

"President Biden did face a choice when he took office. In his choice he put forward no plan and commanded American forces and civilians to get out as fast as they could. This decision told the Taliban they just needed to be able to outlast our presence. In his remarks today, the President gave a speech passing the blame to the previous Administration and the Afghan people. He stated that he stood by his decision and that it was the right thing.

"The chaos that we are witnessing now could have been avoided. A plan should have been put forward to assist those who have been helping our forces over the past decades.

"I am heartbroken for the images that we are seeing on television screens, for the young girls who will no longer be allowed to go to school, and those who feel abandoned by the United States."
