A Doctor's Note on Juneteenth

Dear Friends,

The Juneteenth story is a Texas story. On this historic day in 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas. In addition to learning that the Civil War was over, every slave finally knew that they were free.

This is also a national story. The preamble of the U.S. Constitution mentions – a more perfect union. That step taken in 1865 was a major advance toward that goal.

Over one hundred and fifty-five years later, we all must remember this day as it represents a time when America became “a more perfect union.” It is a part of our shared history. People of all races and ethnic backgrounds are getting acquainted with this important event in this nation’s history – the final, symbolic emancipation of millions.

There is no other land on earth like America. Slavery is totally inconsistent with the notion that all are created equal. I hope you will join me in reflecting on the importance of this day and what it means for our nation. May we never cease to seek justice and equality for all.

We should all remember and aspire to the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King - to live in a nation where our children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Juneteenth reminds us to live our lives in service of that dream to make a more perfect Union and the constant vigilance required by making America more free.

May God bless you and your family, and as the song says, God bless you, Texas.Image
