Burgess: Congress must put forward patient-centered solutions

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Courtruled7-2to uphold the Affordable Care Act.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision maintained the status quo and punted the responsibility to address health care back to Congress. In fact, Congress had several legislative options to stop this lawsuit in its tracks – they were just ignored for political messaging. Congress must stop relying on the Supreme Court to solve the legislative problems we create,” said Burgess.

“This case is one more reason Congress must act now and put forward health care solutions that will work for Americans, not against them. Americans want lower health care costs, to keep their doctors, and have direct access with their providers. Further, we should not be taking health care insurance away from the over 70 percent of Americans who are overwhelmingly satisfied with their employer-sponsored health insurance. Quite simply, we must look for ways to make this market stronger and more competitive, instead of wiping it out with single-payer health care. Serving as Members of Congress, we should be focusing on the parts of the health insurance market that are working for Americans and build from there.

“SCOTUS made its decision. I know true lasting change will only come from the halls of Congress. I urge my fellow Members to work with me to put forward actual patient-centered solutions.”
