Rescinding 1115 Waiver extension only hurts patients

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), released the following statement after the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rescinded Texas’ Section 1115 Medicaid waiver extension.

“The Biden Administration is doing everything in its power to erase all that the Trump Administration did simply because of the name Trump,” said Burgess. “My office learned about this news late Friday afternoon with no warning and months after the Administration rescinded other states’ Medicaid waivers. This timing and lack of communication shows that the Administration is trying to bury the fact that they did this politically motivated deed. This waiver extension would have allowed vital Medicaid dollars to reach hospitals that provide care to disadvantaged and underserved patients in Texas – a priority for the Lone Star State. Now hospitals, such as Parkland Memorial in Dallas, that depend on these crucial Medicaid payments to offer care have been stripped of the certainty of this waiver in the coming years and will be unable to plan financially for the future. Texas health care providers have already been pushed to the brink during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients and providers do not deserve this unwarranted attack on their ability to receive and provide health care.”
