A Doctor's Note

Emergency Weather Update and Guidance

Dear Friends,

It is upsetting that millions of Texans are about to enter their fourth day without power. Last night on a call with ERCOT, I join other Members of Congress in pressing for answers to many of the questions that you have for why this happened, when will power be restored, and how can this be prevented in the future.

ERCOT officials gave us the rundown for when they realized on Monday that there were going to be issues. They said that this was worse than the hottest summer in Texas back in 2018. As generation resources come back to the grid, electricity will return. ERCOT officials believe they took the right steps to avoid a catastrophe. With that said, their top priority is to get ALL customers electricity.

For those fortunate to have power, please do your part to prevent power overloads and fire hazards.

  1. Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid power overloads or damage from power surges.
  2. Use flashlights, not candles.
  3. Turn off the utilities only if you suspect damage or if local officials instruct you to do so.
**Your gas line can only be turned on by a qualified professional. If any circuit breakers have been tripped, contact an electrician to inspect them before turning them on.

With these freezing temperatures, there is an increase of carbon monoxide poisoning. Here are a few tips from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to keep you and your family safe:

  1. Do not use appliances (charcoal grills, ovens, etc.) to heat your home
  2. Do not run your car inside an attached garage even if the door is open
  3. Do not burn anything in a stove or fireplace that is not properly vented.

Also, please keep in mind that our canine friends and pets are susceptible to inclement weather. During severe weather lasting for prolonged periods of time, make sure to have an adequate supply of pet food and any medications your pet may need. If evacuation is necessary, do not leave your pets behind.

When I receive updated information, I will continue to do my best to ensure that you receive it as quickly as possible.

Stay safe and stay warm,
