Burgess: Presidents should be in command of our troops

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), a member of the House Rules Committee and Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, released the following statement after voting against overturning President Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

“The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief and should have the ability to bring our troops home. President Trump committed to America that he would end the endless wars our country has been fighting. Over the last four years, he has kept his promise. The NDAA placed restrictions on the President’s ability to bring troops home from commitment overseas. Rather than restrict the President’s authority, Congress should do more to see how we can support our troops as they defend this great country while evaluating how to swiftly remove them from harm’s way,” said Burgess.
