A Doctor's note on Coronavirus

July 17, 2020

Dear Friends,

For the last two weeks of July, Congress will be in session to vote on various legislative initiatives. As I discussed today on Mornings with Maria, there is talk of a fourth coronavirus stimulus package developing during this period. At this point, a payroll tax cut, direct aid to families, and business liability insurance are all on the negotiating table.

National Updates
The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) will close its COVID-19 industry hotline today, and instead provide support for industry and lab questions through a directory.

  • The FDA’s MedWatch Alert webpage on safety and reported adverse events includes information on the latest recalls of hand sanitizers due to potential methanol contamination.

The Department of Health and Human Services, via the Health Resources and Services Administration, will distribute $10 billion in a second round of funding to hospitals in high impact COVID-19 areas.

The National Institutes of Health created a dashboard with proposals that are part of the NIH Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics Tech Initiative, an effort to inspire innovation on an accurate, easy-to-use COVID-19 test.

Texas Updates
The Texas Education Agency released further guidance on schools reopening in Fall 2020. School systems in communities experiencing high cases of COVID-19 can limit in-person instruction in 4-week increments by applying for a waiver.

As cases in Texas continue to rise, please continue to stay home and stay safe.

Until next time, this is your doctor's note.
