A Doctor's Note

Coronavirus Update

This past week, I started my Thursday by talking with Sirius XM's Tim Farley and WFAA's Mark Davis. I told them both about the importance of passing the $8.3 billion emergency supplemental to fund the coronavirus response efforts. Later that day, Congress authorized the funding, and President Trump signed the funding bill on Friday morning. This funding is essential to ensure that public health workers have the tools they need to continue and bolster their efforts.

Before voting on the spending bill this week, I was briefed by Vice President Pence, and he told Congress that there would be an increase in the number of test kits released over the course of the next week, so that individuals across the country can get tested. Also, I spoke at the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) Board Meeting about the inevitable impact of the coronavirus on their companies as it continues to spread worldwide.

We must continue to remain vigilant when traveling or in crowded areas. No one can predict the outcomes right now, and we are still learning about the coronavirus. Washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and staying home from work or school when you feel ill are some of the most important ways to keep ourselves and others around you safe throughout the next few weeks.

I want to end with the words of my friend, Dr. Scott Gottlieb: "This is a dangerous virus. We have faced worse, and prevailed. People will suffer and die. The most vulnerable are at greatest risk. We must all work together to protect them. The next few months will be hard, but we will preserve life, and eventually conquer this pathogen."

As always, I appreciate hearing from you on this issue or any other issue. May God bless you and your family, and as the song says, God bless you Texas.
