Burgess to Resort Executives: America’s Public Health Agencies are Working in Tandem to Keep America Safe and Healthy

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health delivered remarks yesterday to the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) Board Meeting. He spoke to the board about the rising concern of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.

"During my time as a physician in Congress, there have been several serious disease outbreaks in many parts of the world, caused by the Zika, Ebola, MERS, H1N1, Bird Flu, and SARS viruses,” Burgess said. “These are some of the many instances in which my expertise as a physician has come in handy as a legislator. While I was concerned with each of these viruses, I have a sense of urgent concern for the coronavirus.”

Burgess went on to encourage the board members to create their own business preparedness plans. He mentioned that this is not only for their guests but also for their employees.

“As the global and community spread of this novel coronavirus is a growing threat to public health, it is almost certainly going to impact travel, and therefore your companies.”

As he concluded his remarks, he reminded of the importance of staying vigilant; knowing the symptoms; and seeking medical treatment if you suspect that you are sick.

He also mentioned that what we are witnessing right now is that thus far during this outbreak, our public health system is working as federal, state, and local health officials work in tandem in this robust, rapid response.
