House Approves Burgess Measure to Protect Athletes from Abuse

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Republican Leader of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed his bipartisan amendment to H.R. 3055 that increases financial support for the Keep Young Athletes Safe Act, which provides funding for nonprofit organizations, including the United States Center for Safesport, to protect amateur athletes in the Olympic program against emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

“All abuse is both tragic and preventable. As young Americans represent our nation in sports at home and around the world, no athlete should face emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. It is critical for Congress to fully support the Keep Young Athletes Safe Act grant program to ensure that we are doing all we can to protect American athletes from the evils of abuse. I am grateful that the House passed this commonsense amendment to support young athletes.”

Background:

Dr. Burgess’ amendment increases funding for the Keep Young Athletes Safe Act grant program by $2.5 million in fiscal year 2020. He introduced this bipartisan amendment with the support of Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN), Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Rep. Ann Kuster (D-NH).

During a May 2018 Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing, Dr. Burgess sought answers from leaders of the U.S. Olympic community about their ability to protect athletes from sexual abuse.
