Burgess Votes on Continuing Resolution
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congress voted on a Continuing Resolution (CR) that will fund the federal government for the next three weeks. The CR passed the House by a vote of 271 to 158 and will now move to the Senate. Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (TX-26) released the following statement after voting in favor of the legislation: “No one likes short-term CRs, but Democrats failed to pass an appropriations bill so here we are, having to work on legislation that should have been done last Congress. I expect the House and Senate to pass a long-term CR that will fund the rest of the fiscal year before this short-term CR expires. Further postponement is not an option. “This short-term measure, which includes $2 billion in cuts for every week of funding, was necessary to prevent a government shutdown while Senate continues to work through the long-term Continuing Resolution that was passed in the House last month and will fund the government through the end of the fiscal year. With this legislation, we will have cut $10 billion in just five weeks. “The bottom line is that we need to stop spending money we don’t have if we want to revive our economy and allow employers to create jobs. The CR that passed in February includes serious long term cuts to spending, and is the first real effort in over two years that even beings to address the massive $1.5 trillion deficit our nation is facing.” ###
