Burgess in the News

Letter to the Editor: A service, not a stunt

Fort Worth Star-Telegram, November 10, 2009
I would like to thank U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess for taking time from his very busy schedule to come to the North Richland Hills library to discuss aspects of the proposed healthcare bill. This bill is being railroaded through Congress in less than seven days without the benefit of citizen review and input to elected representatives.

This is the message that Burgess was attempting to deliver to the constituents of his district. Thursday’s Star-Telegram editorial, "A stunt without a purpose," attempted to belittle and make light of his visit and message. As one attendee at the meeting, I found his comments informative and the physical size of the almost 2,000-page bill overwhelming.

Burgess’ 25 years of practicing medicine and seven years in Congress working on a number of healthcare-related bills to address needed reforms are to be commended rather than demeaned. I agree we need to address needed changes in our health insurance industry, but such haste and a unipartisan approach can lead only to severe damage to the healthcare services supported by the majority of Americans.
