Nine House Doctors Gather to Talk Health Care

CQ Today, Edward Epstein, July 6, 2009
Nine doctors of the House will be in the house Tuesday when they travel to a Washington medical school auditorium to discuss health care with members of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia.

The non-partisan society tried to contact all the health professionals in Congress, Democratic and Republican, but ended up with a Republican-only list that includes eight physicians and a clinical psychologist to talk about plans to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

“We wanted everybody. If you treat patients we want to talk to you,” said Chris Lee, spokesman for the society.

The Republican House members scheduled to attend the event on Tuesday afternoon are obstetrician-gynecologist Michael C. Burgess of Texas, heart surgeon Charles Boustany Jr., gastroenterologist Bill Cassidy, former Navy medical officer John Fleming of Louisiana, family doctor Paul Broun, obstetrician Phil Gingrey, orthopedic surgeon Tom Price of Georgia and obstetrician Phil Roe of Tennessee. They will be joined by Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania, a clinical psychologist.

In all, there are 13 physicians serving as full House members, along with one delegate from a territory. And two senators are doctors.

The meeting will occur at the George Washington University Hospital Auditorium.
