Letter to the Editor: Probing financial crisis

Re: "Regulatory Meltdown -- Who's to blame? Congress can't tell us," Tuesday Editorials.

I couldn't agree more on the need for a bipartisan 9/11 commission-type investigation into the breakdown of our country's financial system.

I introduced a bill, HR 2111, the Congressional Commission on Financial Accountability and Preparedness Act, which would create such a commission. Unfortunately, House Democrats had other ideas and passed a diluted and weak attempt that will only serve to provide political cover and hold no one accountable.

My bill was not written to protect special interests or certain members of Congress. The Democrat-led bill, however, called for an unbalanced commission. Its report to Congress would be due on Dec. 15, 2010 -- conveniently one month after the November 2010 election. I voted against this bill.

There is no doubt that we must ensure that those who were responsible are held accountable, and we need to look into the causes of the crisis so we can make certain this does not happen again. This is a goal that is shared by most Americans and should not be tainted by special interests.
