Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health spoke with Ed Henry on America’s Newsroom to discuss the ongoing process of how Congress is working to help Americans affected by this Coronavirus.

Here are a few highlights:

Will the Senate act quickly: “I think they will. We’ve gone from a full employment situation to a no-employment situation in literally a few weeks’ time. It is a shock to the system. I think people are adjusting, from what I’ve seen here locally, it seems to be the case. The House bill, even though it had some imperfections, passed the other night. It needs to happen.”

The President and Congress need to act: “The House could move quickly if the Senate had different ideas, but the main thing is they need to get [their ideas] out there and we need to hear about them. Let’s get going on this. The President has said he needs it, we need to get him what he needs.”

Congress needs to make an informed response: “We really haven’t had a chance to evaluate what’s in this third episode that we are going to be facing… we really haven’t had a single hearing in the Energy and Commerce Committee so that has been tough. Now the Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee are going to have a series of conference calls today. I think that’s good, so we can begin to talk through some of the things that are being proposed.”
