The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Walensky signed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendation for a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for immunocompromised individuals.
The CDC released a study indicating that the mRNA vaccines were highly effective in preventing severe COVID-19 symptoms and hospitalizations for at least 24 weeks.
A report issued by the CDC found that all three COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are highly effective in preventing COVID-19 hospitalizations for adults. The vaccines were more than 90% effective at preventing hospitalizations from earlier variants of the virus and more than 80% effective against hospitalizations from the Delta variant.
The CDCreported that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were 74.5% effective at preventing earlier strains of COVID-19 for nursing home residents. The agency later found that the effectiveness of these vaccines fell to 53.1% in preventing against the Delta variant for nursing home residents.
The Department of Health and Human Services Public Health released a joint-statement with medical experts indicating mRNA COVID-19 booster shots will be needed. The agency is preparing to offer mRNA booster shots starting September 20, and recommend individuals receive the booster eight months following administration of the second dose of the vaccine.

Pfizersubmitted early-stage clinical trial data on the safety and efficacy of their COVID-19 booster vaccine dose to the Food and Drug Administration.
North Texas Update:
Gov. Abbott announced that Texas will introduce an additional nine COVID-19 antibody infusion centers, including one in Dallas-Fort Worth.
