Burgess: Congress must address the border crisis first

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), released the following statement after voting against H.R. 6 – the DREAM and Promise Act.

“Republicans and Democrats agree that we must provide solutions for those who were brought here as children through no fault of their own. They should not be punished for their parents’ decisions; however, those solutions should not prioritize one group of immigrants over another," said Burgess. Congress should not be passing legislation that will incentivize our laws to be broken. Many who seek to come to the United States do so without authorization because they believe we will eventually give them legal status.”

“Due to the policies put in place by President Biden’s Administration, we are experiencing a crisis at our southern border greater than we’ve seen in the last 7 years. This legislation will only further encourage traffickers to keep smuggling children into the United States. We must put policies in place that will protect these children instead of allowing them to continue remain as pawns.

“Further, this legislation does not close the loopholes for those who misrepresent their status, and it prohibits the Secretary of Homeland Security from taking action to address these issues.

“We have a crisis at the southern border whether the Administration wants to admit it or not. Congress must address that crisis first.”
