Burgess: Autonomous Vehicles Will Improve Mobility For All Americans

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), member of the House Rules Committee and Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health released the following statement after the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee hearing on autonomous vehicles.

“In the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, this week, we heard compelling testimony on the development of autonomous vehicles,” Burgess said. “Autonomous vehicles will reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility for the elderly and individuals with disabilities, and could significantly improve safety for all who use our roadways.

“The technology supporting autonomous vehicles is highly complex and relies on artificial intelligence and advanced algorithms to provide the most comprehensive and effective vehicle operation. Unfortunately, these systems are vulnerable to cyber threats that could disable systems and potentially result in physical harm to occupants.

“We must ensure that the systems underlying autonomous vehicles are secure and that industry and the federal government work together to establish safety standards without hindering innovation. This will allow both industry and the federal government the opportunity to review the data and move in the right direction.

“The accident resulting in a pedestrian death in Arizona is evidence that our regulatory agency -  NHTSA – must ensure and assure the safety of all participants.

“In addition, increasing safety on our roadways involves harmonizing autonomous vehicle operation with other modes of transportation, including motorcycle riders. Motorcyclists enjoy the thrill of the ride and will continue riding alongside autonomous vehicles in the future. It is important that autonomous vehicle technology recognize, categorize, and accurately respond to motorcyclists to ensure the safety of all riders and passengers. I look forward to continued development of safe autonomous vehicles that effectively share the roadway with all users.
