Today, Congressman Michael Burgess participated in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Congressional Briefing on Avian Flu in the U.S. Capitol. The meeting included PAHO Assistant Director Dr. Carissa Etienne, Deputy Director Dr. Joxel Garcia, and remarks by Representative Silvestre Reyes and Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D.
H5N1 avian influenza has now reached some 40 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa, half of them in the past four weeks. More than 150 million birds have died or been culled as a result of the virus, with economic losses in the billions of dollars.
Congressman Burgess’ remarks were focused on reporting new outbreaks early and accurately; stopping the spread of the disease while it is still in animals; protecting North and South America by coordinating efforts along all borders; progressing in our preparedness planning efforts; and most importantly educating the public and elected officials on the potential threat.
