Burgess Reacts to President Trump’s Third State of the Union Address

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), member of the House Rules Committee and Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health released the following statement after the President gave his third State of the Union Address.

“Despite the distraction of impeachment, President Trump delivered a message of hope to the American people,” Burgess said. “In line with the theme – the Great American Comeback, his address laid out a continued vision for optimism.”

“Over the last three years, the President has boosted the American worker with instituting policy that grew our economy and leveled the field by re-negotiating trade deals with our biggest trading partners. He has supported American families by providing options for education and putting forward workforce training initiatives with his Pledge to the American Worker.

“America has long been the leader in the development of new cures. Especially in the wake of outbreaks such as the 2019 novel Coronavirus, our nation’s innovation is critical as our biomedical researchers work to develop vaccines to address this public health threat.

“It is essential to maintain the advancement and availability of new treatments and cures, and we must keep that in mind when working to lower drug costs. Last year, the President challenged Congress to forgo party allegiance and provide solutions to lower the costs of prescription drugs. He has removed the costly mandates on health insurance which now allows the American family the opportunity to find the coverage that is best for them.

“Furthermore, I agree with the President’s words that America should be a sanctuary for law abiding citizens not illegal aliens. He has kept his promise to improve security along our southern border and protect our nation.

“Tonight, Americans heard a message of hope and fulfilled promises and a forward-looking plan for our nation. I appreciate the continued leadership of the President and will keep working for the American people.”

In attendance with Burgess was Captain “Trey” Wilbur Marvin Gregory III. From Flower Mound, TX, Burgess nominated Captain Gregory to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 2013 before entering the United States Marine Corps. Last fall, Captain Gregory risked his own life to save elderly residents from a fire in D.C.
