A new cost analysis of the health care overhaul law was issued this week. It was the third in as many weeks — and it won’t be the last. Two of the reports were requested by Republican lawmakers, part of a steady stream of inquiries to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and to the actuary for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) about the health care overhaul (PL 111-148, PL 111-152) and its cost to the government. Republicans are using the results as fodder for their election ... Read more

Mr. Speaker, how many times did we hear during this past year, year and a half, ``If you like what you have, you can keep it''--talking about health insurance, talking about your doctor. We even heard the Presidential candidate of 2008 who eventually won the Presidency, ``If you like your doctor, if you like your insurance company, nothing about my law will require you to change that.'' But now we're finding out an entirely different story. Published on CNN Money, published in Fortune magazine t... Read more

MYTH: If you like your health insurance, you can keep it FACT: If you like your health insurance, you may LOSE it May 5, 2010 Dear Colleague: For months leading up to the passage of the Democrats “health insurance reform” bill, Members of Congress, providers and businesses relentlessly argued that the passage of the bill wouldn’t cap the costs of health care and wouldn’t let Americans keep their current coverage. Unfortunately, the bill passed, and people started to act JUST AS THEY TOLD THE DEM... Read more

I thank you for yielding, Madam Speaker, and I thank you for this night so that we can get together and talk about something that is still on the minds of almost everybody in the United States because, quite frankly, even though this bill has passed both Houses of Congress and even though it has been signed into law by the President, the overwhelming majority of the people in this country are waking up every day to find out there is... Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas), Chairman of the Congressional Health Care Caucus, released the following statement on the recent report from the Office of the Actuary at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services: “The findings from this report should surprise no one. For over a year I have said that the Democrats more-government-and-higher-taxes approach was the wrong way to achieve meaningful health reform, and would fail. Americans can expect to pay more for health care insurance, and businesses will be squeezed by higher costs, more rules and regulations, and higher taxes. Read more

This afternoon I thought we'd talk a little bit more about the health care bill that was passed by this House last month because it is an important subject and one that continues to cause problems across the country. Almost anyplace you go, people want to ask you questions about, Why did you do this bill, and what does it mean for me, and what can I expect going forward? Mr. Speaker, I know I need to confine my comments to the ... Read more

Rep. Burgess delivered a 1-minute speech on the House floor outlining the negative effect health care reform will have on American businesses: Mr. Speaker, tomorrow we were to have a hearing in my Committee on Energy and Commerce about the companies in the United States that restated their earnings as a result of us passing the misguided health care bill last month. These companies were performing under requirements of the Securities and Exchange Commission and under the Federal Accounting Standards Board. Read more

As a doctor and a congressman, Rep. Michael Burgess said the best thing that could happen to the new overhaul of the nation's healthcare plan is for it to be repealed. Speaking to more than 50 people at a Greater Keller Chamber of Commerce luncheon Monday, Burgess said there are changes in the new law that are good -- such as requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions -- but he said he believes many people didn't want the entire healthcare system revamped. "People told me, 'W... Read more

The Obama administration has offered little in response to a request from House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders for written records from meetings last summer between the White House and health industry stakeholders, including the American Medical Association. The meetings produced pledges to reduce the growth in health care spending by up to $2 trillion over a decade. Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R, Texas), wrote the original request. A revised version was approved Jan. 27. White House counse... Read more
