Supreme Court Expansion is Political Theater

Washington, D.C. –Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), released the following statement after Senate and House Democrats released a plan to expand the U.S. Supreme Court by four seats.

“Democrats plan to expand the Supreme Court is a hostile takeover,” said Burgess. “The idea of fundamentally changing the highest court of the land has been tried before and failed. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed the idea in hopes that it would protect New Deal legislation. Then and now the proposal to expand the Supreme Court is solely politically motivated.

“There have been plenty of times that I have not agreed with the decision of the court; however, it would have been wrong for me to use my influence and stand on the steps of the Supreme Court to challenge the Justices' authority.

“Congress would be wise to heed the warnings of the late Justice Ginsberg and sitting Justice Beyer that expanding the Supreme Court would only politicize the court and it would lose all credibility.”
