Art Competition

2013 “An Artistic Discovery” High School Art Competition

I am pleased to announce the finalists for “An Artistic Discovery,” the annual Congressional High School Art Competition.  From Tuesday, April 2nd  through Monday, April 8th, all qualified submissions were posted in a virtual gallery on my website.  The public was invited to vote online for their favorite pieces.  The artwork earning the most votes is named the “Texas Choice” winner and earns a finalist spot.  The “Texas Choice” winner is Katherine Choi for her artwork entitled “Boy Eat Dog World.” Katherine is a senior at Flower Mound High School and a student of Deborah Gallatin.

In addition, the Greater Denton Arts Council selected Ms. Jo Williams, a Denton artist and art educator, to judge this year’s competition.  Ms. Williams selected one piece from each school as "Best of School" and also selected other pieces for “Jurist’s Choice” based upon artistic merit. The students selected for “Best of School,” Jurist’s Choice” and “Texas Choice” are finalists and will have their artwork further considered for the Grand Prize, First, Second or Third Prize.  Art teachers will deliver finalists' artwork on April 15th or 16th to Congressman Burgess' district office or the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton for final judging by the art juror.

Competition finalists, their parents, teachers and school administrators are invited to attend a reception at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton on Monday, April 29th, at 5:30 p.m.  All the finalists will be honored during the reception and the "Best of School," “Jurist’s Choice” and "Texas Choice" artworks will be on display.  The Grand Prize, First, Second and Third Place winners will be announced at the reception.  The Grand Prize winning student's artwork will be displayed for an entire year in the U.S. Capitol.  In addition, the First Place winner will have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in my Lewisville district office for the upcoming year.
