Burgess Praises Trump Administration for Restoration of Funding for Healthy Texas Women

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), member of the House Rules Committee and Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health released the following statement after the announcement of the restoration of federal funding for Healthy Texas Women.

“For nearly three years, I worked alongside Governor Greg Abbott to have this funding restored. This announcement is great news for women and for Texas,” Burgess said. “As an OB-GYN, I understand and value the importance of providing health care to all women.”

“Texas submitted its proposal for this important Medicaid 1115 waiver to supplement state funding for the Healthy Texas Women program in June of 2017. I thank the Trump Administration for taking action and approving this waiver.

"Restoring this funding will allow the Healthy Texas Women program to conduct more clinical screenings and other vital health care services for Texas women.

“The funding should never have been revoked, and it is past time the federal government provides Texas with the freedom to determine how Texans receive their health care.”

The Healthy Texas Woman program provides health care services for women below the poverty level and serves more than 170,000 Texans. In addition to federal funding, the program is funded through the state.
